Nucs have either a proven, overwintered Carniolan queen or a queen mated in the current season, depending on availability. If you have a preference let us know and we will do our best to accommodate.
The nucs consist of four frames. Two and a half to three of those frames have brood in all stages and the remaining frames have an empty place for the queen to lay or they are filled with honey and pollen. They come in a non-refundable Pro Nuc box which is included in the price.
- Where can I pick up my nuc?
We have rendezvous locations in Saanich, Victoria, Langford, Duncan, Nanaimo, and Parksville between May 15th and May 31st. Anyone can pick up nucs from us on Salt Spring Island as well. If you are interested in a large order and you’re not close to any of our rendezvous points please contact us to discuss delivery options.
- Are your bees inspected prior to selling nucs?
Yes, they are. A copy of the permit is avaialble here.
- What size frames are included with nucs?
Nucs come with standard Langstroth frames, otherwise known as deep frames. They are typically less than 5 years old and mostly incorporate drawn plastic foundation in a well made wooden frame.
- Do you give refunds if I order nucs and change my mind?
You will receive a full refund, if you change your mind about an order prior to February 15th. After that date, like with almost every nuc producer, the deposit portion becomes non-refundable, so that we can safely plan our sales and maintain our colony inventory at the proper level. However we also feel that since if we reach spring and are sold out it isn’t fair to take a deposit that we didn’t really earn or to force customers to buy from us because they have a credit rather than because we provide a good service and product. Therefore if we sell out in a particular year and you have decided you no longer need your order we will issue a refund.
- What kind of box do the nucs come in?Our nucs come in a solid plastic Pro Nuc box. These boxes are non-refundable because we want to eliminate all possible sources of disease getting into our operation. They are however very reusable and useful tools to have. They can be used as a swarm trap box, a transport box if you are making your own nucs or retrieving a swarm, or as a queen mating box.
- Are there taxes on bee sales?
Bees and queens are considered livestock and are tax exempt.
- Are the queens marked?
Queens are marked with a colored dot on their thorax indicating the year they were mated. There is no charge for marking queens and if you would prefer an unmarked queen please let us know in advance.
- Does Island Bees mail nucs?
No we don’t. It’s not uncommon for things to go wrong with mailing nucs.
